Mercy Hospital Oncology Physician Recognized for Role in Advising Center of Disease Control

Dr. Marilu Madrigal completes service on committee addressing issues related to gynecological cancers, including HPV vaccine

Miami, FL (April 05, 2007) – Marilu Madrigal, M.D., a physician at The Miami Cancer Center at Mercy Hospital, a consistent leader in the diagnosis and treatment of oncology, was awarded a completion certificate for her work on the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Federal Advisory Committee for the Center of Disease Control (CDC). Specific matters addressed during Madrigal’s term included pap smear technology, mammography technology and, most widely known as well as controversial, the HPV vaccine.

In her role on the committee, Madrigal contributed countless hours, knowledge, skill and energy to providing the CDC the most accurate assessment of what is happening in her field. With the information provided by the committee, the CDC then has the ability to educate the public, effectively regulate medications, create standards of practice and identify risks that need to be addressed by anyone related to patient care.

The issue that Madrigal was most passionate about during her term was the task of making the HPV vaccine available to women, specifically young girls. Due to the critical effectiveness of the vaccine, Madrigal recognized that countless lives could be saved by keeping women from contracting human papillomavirus, the virus that leads to cervical cancers in about 10-30% of patients. Due to her work and the work of others in a Federal Government capacity, the vaccine is now available to the public.

At the forefront of the gynecologic oncology specialty, Madrigal has dedicated most of her professional career to working with women with cancer. Graduating from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, she did her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital where she obtained chief resident status. Madrigal obtained her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology from the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Sylvester Cancer Center. She is a dedicated physician, professor, researcher and member of the medical community.
