Carlos Lavernia, M.D. successfully performs hip replacement surgery on NBA championship coach
Miami, FL (February 21, 2007) – In early January, Pat Riley commissioned Dr. Carlos Lavernia, a world renowned orthopedic surgeon and Medical Director of the Orthopedic Institute at Mercy Hospital, to perform a total hip replacement surgery, also referred to as hip arthoplasty. The procedure is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that reforms the hip joint and, in turn, leads to a better quality of life.
The procedure, a total hip replacement, took place on January 11th. Riley recently returned to coaching the HEAT on February 21st in Houston.
“As most can imagine, surgery is usually the last resort, and certainly the least preferred option,” said Riley. “However, upon meeting with Dr. Lavernia and becoming better educated about the procedure and chances for a long term recovery, it was clearly the best option. I want to thank Dr. Lavernia for ‘getting me back on the sidelines.”
“As Pat’s condition continued to deteriorate, I was confident that the hip arthroplasty was the only real method of treatment and repair,” said Dr. Lavernia. “I am very pleased with the outcome.”
Nationally recognized for his advancements in technology and his ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality in patient care, Dr. Carlos Lavernia was recently honored by being selected as one of the prestigious Best Doctors in America in 2005.
